"Ideas for Honoring Your Sibling," by Sarah Gniazdowski

Need suggestions for how to honor the life of your sibling or loved one?

Here are some fun and creative ideas:

  1. Write a note to your sibling on a balloon and release it with your family on occasions such as: their birthday or the anniversary of their death. Fun twist: Attach a card in a Ziploc bag at the end of the string on the balloon. On the card, explain your sibling’s story. My family and I did this at our Dash For Danny walk/run. We got an email two days later from a family who found Danny’s balloon in the Reflection Pool in Washington D.C. How cool!! And it helped spread awareness of MPS (my brother's condition)!!

  2. On your sibling's birthday, go out to eat at their favorite restaurant. For example, my brother loved the chicken strips at Roosters in Dayton, Ohio. Fun twist: Leave a tip for however old they would be and leave a note on the receipt explaining your reason for the tip.

  3. Make a scrapbook or a photo album in their memory.

  4. Make a donation in their memory to a non-profit organization.

  5. Plant a tree in your backyard in memory of them.
