What are Video Conferences?
Siblings with a Mission helps siblings connect with others through online video conferences. Sibling Support Groups host video conferences on our video conference platform. Support group leaders are trained in moderating, monitoring, and scheduling video sessions and answering difficult questions siblings may ask.
After joining Siblings with a Mission, members receive a link to the video platform and the Video Recordings page. Support group leaders schedule video sessions with members in their group and send emails and updates regarding video sessions. Siblings are encouraged to participate, but we understand that some members may be uncomfortable with sharing. Siblings can always join and listen!
We also understand that many members may not have access to a video camera. Therefore, video sessions are recorded and posted in a private, log-in page linked to our website. If a sibling is in a video session and does not wish to be recorded, support group leaders must abide by his or her request. In addition, support group leaders must ask for permission from video participants before pushing “record.”
Most of all conversations will be held in English. However, some support group leaders may host a video session in another language. The language will be specified prior to the date of the video session.
Synonyms for Video Conferences: “video conversation,” “video session,” “video chat.”
Synonym for Support Group Leader: "Chairman"
Procedure for Video Conversations
1) Siblings join Sibling with a Mission and provide an email address or method of contact
2) Support group leaders schedule and lead video sessions. The support group leader will send 2 emails (one two-three weeks prior to the video session and one four-five days prior to the video session) to members with the schedule of upcoming video sessions (date and time, with time-zone specified) and a link to the video session page.
3) Members must sign up for video conversations by simply replying to the support group leader via email. This is because up to 4 people can join video sessions at a time. But no worries, at least two video sessions will be held a month.
4) Information regarding upcoming video sessions will be posted on our website in the Upcoming Events page as well as on our Facebook page.
5) On the day of the video session, 10-15 minutes prior to the start of the session, support group leaders will enter the session and set up the session page so members can join
6) 5 minutes prior to the video session, members can click on the link sent by the support group leader and/or join the video software platform.
7) Members should bring headphones and have a good internet connection.
8) Members should connect their audio and video camera so they can see and hear others, as well as be seen and heard
9) Support group leaders will begin the session
10) Introduce yourself. Talk, listen, and have fun!
Video Conference Discussion
During video conferences, siblings can meet other members who are experiencing similar situations. Siblings are encouraged to share their story and ask questions. Some questions that support group leaders are trained in answering are:
a. How do I explain my sibling’s disability to my friends and family?
b. What should I do when people stare at my sibling?
c. How can I concentrate on my work if my sibling makes a lot of noise and requires a lot of attention.
d. Why do my parents spend more time with my sibling with a disability than they do with me?
e. How should I deal with my emotions of anger, jealousy, and embarrassment?
f. How can I have more privacy when my sibling requires a therapist, aid, or nurse in the house?
g. What should I do when my sibling goes to the hospital?
Note: questions are not limited to those in the list above.
