"Christmas Morning: Perspectives from a MPS Sibling"
By Alexandria Young
It's Christmas Morning.
Usually, you wake up at the crack of dawn and go wake up your parents and then go and open presents. However, living with a special needs sibling is a little bit different. On Christmas morning, I wake up, get my sister's medicines together, and then I have to put my sister's medications through her tube because she cannot take her medications orally. My sister Mikal pees the bed every night so she has to have a bath and then we have to get her dressed. Then, and only then, can we finally open presents.
My sister cannot open presents by herself. We have to help her because she will eat the wrapping paper and choke. You have to help special needs children through everything. It's hard and you need patience. However, you learn to have a lot of patience when you have a sibling with a disability that you can't control.
Even though it's tough, I love my sister through it all and I will love her till the end.
