"Sight for Life: Be Inspired to Serve Others," by Sachi Bhati, Science Contributor
In 2012, my brother, sister, and I co-founded a non-profit organization, Sight for Life. Sight for Life raises money to help fund and maintain School-Based Health Centers (SBHC). These SBHC’s provide medical care for students whose parents don’t have the time nor the resources to take their children to the doctor’s office. There are about 30 SBHC’s in the Tri-State (Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana) region alone. Yearly these centers help about a thousand or more kids each. With dental, vision, and primary care, students are now able to get the care they need for medical issues that they didn’t get before. To help SBHCs, my sister, brother, and I raise money at school through bake sales and receive donations through third-party donors.
Growing up, we always used to hear stories about how generations of our family helped people. This idea was instilled in us from a young age: help others whenever you are able to. Helping others was “in our genetics.” So after the passing of my grandpa, the desire that my siblings and me shared to help others increased dramatically. Other than telling us how important it is to serve others, my grandfather never let us forget that no matter how young you are. you are always able to make a difference. My siblings and I created Sight for Life to honor his memory, for all that he taught us about helping others.
My siblings and I are always accepting help from others. If your school doesn’t have a SBHC or isn’t eligible for one. you can always raise money for a local SBHC’s. If your school doesn’t have a SBHC and they qualify for one, you can bring it up with your administration. Generally, these SBHC’s are located within schools with at least 600 students, 75% of whom are Medicaid eligible.
