FADE IN:
INT. BEDROOM - EARLY AFTERNOON
MARIE SCOTT, a 15 year old girl, with long dark brown hair, sitting against the bedroom door with her knees pulled to her chest. Tears are running down her face. She closes her eyes.
EXT. PATIO PORCH - EARLY MORNING (FLASHBACK)
She is sitting on the screened-in Patio. Her father, BRYAN SCOTT, in his fifties with dark brown curly hair sits in a chair next to her.
Her mother, PAM BAKER, in her fifties with messy red hair, sits with her legs crossed in the chair across from them. Beside her, sits her stepmother, KIMBERLY SCOTT, mid forties with long blonde hair.
They’re staring at Marie with tears in their eyes. Marie sits quietly waiting for someone to speak.
BRYAN
Honey, We have something to tell you.
Her dad takes a deep breathe.
BRYAN
Your brother, Robert’s body is shutting down.
Marie sits speechlessly.
PAM
I’m sorry honey but Sanfilippo syndrome is taking over his body. His organs are failing. There is
nothing we can do to stop it. Tears begin to roll down Marie’s eyes.
PAM
We knew that with his disorder this day would come eventually.
MARIE
How can this be happening?
KIMBERLY
He has stopped eating sweetheart.
There is nothing that can be done.
INT. BEDROOM - EARLY AFTERNOON (PRESENT)
Marie is sitting in her room against the door. She sits up and stretches out her legs on the floor.
KIMBERLY (V.O.)
There is nothing that can be done
Marie gets up from the floor and wipes her face.
MARIE
I can’t accept it. I have to try.
But if it is happening then I need to spend time with him.
HALLWAY
Marie opens her bedroom door and walks out into the hallway. She keeps her head held high and wipes her face one last time before walking into Robert’s bedroom.
INT. ROBERT'S BEDROOM
Marie walks into Robert’s bedroom and scans the room. It is a large room with two beds. There is a regular bed and a
hospital bed with railings which is where Robert lies.
ROBERT SCOTT, late teens, with dark brown shaggy hair. He is very skinny with his cheek bones showing.
She takes a deep breathe and walks over to his bed. Robert looks over at her slowly and smiles.
MARIE
Hey Buddy! Somebody told me that you haven’t been eating lately and I’m sorry but I won’t accept that.
She sees a cup of apple sauce sitting on the small table beside his bed. She grabs it and scoops a little on the edge
of the spoon, and puts it in his mouth. Robert holds the food in his mouth unable to swallow. Marie
takes the spoon and removes the food from his mouth.
MARIE
Robert, you always eat for me. Please eat. Just a little? I can’t lose you Robert. I need you.
Marie sulks her head and begins to cry.
MARIE (V.O.)
Robert physically can’t eat. Sanfilippo syndrome has made his body forget how to swallow. It
really has taken over his body.
Robert lies in the bed staring at her.
Marie can see his cheek bones beginning to extend from his face.
MARIE
How could I not have seen this sooner?
Marie climbs in bed with Robert and lays her head on his chest.
MARIE
What do you say we watch some cartoons?
Marie turns on his favorite cartoons and they lay in bed watching. Camera shows multiple shots of hours passing by.
Robert quietly laughs and smiles, reacting to the cartoons.
BED
Marie lies down in the bed across from Robert. Looking over at him sleep until she falls asleep.
INT. ROBERT'S BEDROOM - 3AM
Marie suddenly awakes from a deep sleep, popping up out of bed. Marie runs over to Robert’s bed.Robert is laying in bed breathing shallow as his eyes scan the room.
MARIE
Oh, Buddy. Don’t be scared to go. I know now that you need to go. I want you to be out of pain.
Tears begin to roll down her cheeks.
MARIE
I promise I will be okay. I will miss you but I promise I will be okay. It’s okay to let go buddy.
Robert looks over at Marie and gives her a faint smile. Marie climbs in the bed with Robert. She lays her head on his
chest and holds his hand.
INT. ROBERT'S BEDROOM - 5AM
Marie lays in bed with Robert watching his breathes. Camera scans the room.
Bryan sits on the other bed in the room by himself. He keeps quiet but tears begin to build in his eyes. Kimberly is pacing around the room, with tears in her eyes. She fumbles through her small sheets of papers in her hands looking for phone numbers. Pam is sitting in a chair beside Robert’s bed hysterically crying.
PAM
I can’t believe this is happening. You can’t go Robert. You are my only son! Don’t leave me. Pam begins to hyperventilate as Robert’s breathes grow farther and farther apart. Robert lies there looking around at everyone who loves him. Lastly, he looks at his baby sister, Marie, who is still holding his hand.
Marie looks up to see Robert looking at her.
MARIE
Robert, It’s okay to let go. Don’t worry about me. I love you. I want you to be out of pain. The only way
to do that is to let go. Marie takes a deep breathe.
MARIE
I will be okay as long as you promise to always watch over me.
Tears rolling down Marie’s face, she leans up and kisses Robert on the head.
Robert smiles and squeezes her hand before closing his eyes for the last time.
INT. ROBERT'S BEDROOM - 8AM
Marie gets up from the bed hearing footsteps up the stairs.
THE TWO HOSPICE MEN, both in their mid thirties, come in dressed in blue uniform scrubs. They are holding a stretcher with a black bag. As they transfer Robert’s lifeless body to the stretcher Marie kisses him one last time and turns away.
Everyone but Marie and Bryan walk out of the room. They sit on the bed. Marie begins to cry as she glances out the window to see them pulling off with her brother in a black hearse.
Bryan looks over at Marie. He takes a deep breathe.
BRYAN
Honey, I know you are sad and lost without him but I want you to think about something.
Tears roll down both of their faces.
BRYAN
Before he passed he couldn’t do all of the things he once loved to do. But now he can run, talk, and play.
He is finally out of pain.
Marie looks over at her dad.
I know that you miss him. I do too. That was my little boy. But I feel at peace knowing he’s happy now. I hope that it brings you peace too.
MARIE (V.O.)
He’s right. Robert would want me to be strong and happy for him.
Bryan looks at Marie and smiles.
BRYAN
I love you sweet girl.
Bryan kisses her on the head and walks out of the room.
Marie wipes her face and lies down in Robert’s bed.
MARIE
I love you buddy. I hope you are running and laughing. Watch over us from heaven.
